Friday, July 31, 2015 - a date and moment in time I will never forget. I had to pinch myself to confirm if this moment was REAL. I had the AWESOME privilege of personally meeting 2-time Emmy Award nominee; 2-time Grammy Award winner; 11-time Grammy nominee, recipient of 9 Lifetime Achievement Awards and winner of 7 NAACP Image Awards, just to name a few. Her many credits and bodies of work go well beyond vocal performance and recording but also include theatre, film, television and more. The legendary artist is none other than psalmist PATTI LABELLE. At age of 71 years young, her vocals were melodically beautiful, strong, and full of stamina – the concert was phenomenal!
How did I get here? Well, here’s how this experience unfolded. Patti LaBelle was scheduled to perform LIVE and in concert at the Ohio State Fair in Columbus on July 31, 2015. I knew right off hand I would be attending that concert. For 4 weeks, I made countless efforts, trying to be the 9th caller into a local radio station, each time to no avail. Purchasing tickets was never an issue, but I knew you had to win tickets in order to obtain VIP backstage passes. My last radio attempt was Friday, July 31st at 2:40 p.m. - the day of the concert, and again I was NOT the 9th caller. Get this. Approximately one hour later, I received an unidentified caller via my home phone. I didn’t recognize the number and didn’t pick up. But this unknown caller was persistent, calling back several times! So I finally answered the phone and it was the call of a lifetime. The caller said they heard I loved Patti LaBelle and they were offering me 2 concert tickets, along with VIP parking & backstage passes to meet Patti herself. I screamed, called my girlfriend and said “I have 2 Patti LaBelle tickets and you have 30 minutes to get ready. Are you going”? She replied with a scream, “Absolutely!”
My experience with Ms. LaBelle was poise and beauty at its best. Her physical attributes and demeanor were seasoned to perfection. She demonstrated artistic maturity with grace and elegance. All I could do was bow in her presence, which she gracefully returned along with the blow of a kiss. I didn’t cry nor did I portray the actions of a groupie (BUT know my insides were there!). I would go on record to say the enclosed photo captures the biggest smile of my life. Upon sharing my experience with friends and family the question was raised, “Did you slip her your card or CDs?” I absolutely did not. I was just humbled to be in her presence, and that moment deserved a graceful bow to my favorite artist”. My soul was happy and satisfied.
